Playing AJ out of position

I was surviving well enough an hour and a half into a tourney, when I came up with AJ under the gun. Every book I have ever read tells me to muck this hand in a 10-player game. Because there were two empty seats at my table, I decided to limp in. If nobody raises me preflop, I would consider this a good thing if an ace flops. There were a few callers, but no raisers. Sure enough, the AT8 flops, so I went all in to win the pot right there. One caller, who held pocket tens, sent me to the showers. Just a subtle reminder to never ever play AJ out of position ever again.
