GAME 1: CARDINALS 1 YANKEES 2 (10 INNINGS)

The opening salvo in this year's World Series matched best pals and fellow 22-game winners, Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte against one another. Both hurlers rose to the occasion, allowing one run apiece through eight innings, and in the end the game was decided by the closers. The Cardinals got their lone run in the top of the first inning when leadoff hitter, Antonio Perez tripled and scored. The Yankees tied it up in the fourth when a leadoff double by Randy Winn led to a run. The score remained tied at the end of regulation but Brad Lidge, working his second inning, could not record the third out in the bottom half of the tenth. With one out, Henry Blanco and Rafael Furcal reached on singles. Lidge struck out Alex Rodriguez before walking Travis Hafner on four pitches to load the bases for Randy Winn. Winn grounded the next pitch through the infield to give the Yankees the victory.

GAME 2: CARDINALS 9 YANKEES 2

The Cardinals evened the series with an offensive explosion against Yankees' starter, Tom Glavine. Glavine was shaky from the start, hitting Antonio Perez with his first pitch. Mark Sweeney doubled and Derrek Lee walked to load the bases with one out for Jay Payton who gave the Cards all the runs they would need with a long blast down the left-field line. Glavine made it out of the first inning but was pulled in the second after allowing an RBI single to Perez. The Yankees scored their runs on a two-run HR from Randy Winn in the third inning. Payton came to bat in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run single to give him six RBI on the day. Barry Zito pitched eight strong innings for the Cardinals to earn the win and give the Cardinals a split at Yankee Stadium after losing a close game yesterday. The Cards also forced the Yankees' bullpen to throw 117 pitches which could have repercussions later in the series.

W - Barry Zito (1-0)
L - Tom Glavine (0-1)
S - none
HR - Payton (1); Winn (1)
MVP - Payton: 2-5, HR, 6 RBI
