GAME 4: YANKEES 5 CARDINALS 3 (12 INNINGS)
It was a rematch of game one starters, Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens and again it was a close contest decided by the bullpen with the Yankees coming out on top. Both pitchers were dominant despite working on short rest. Clemens was perfect through 3.2 innings and gave up only one run on three hits through five innings, departing after a mere 63 pitches thrown. Pettitte was even better, tossing perfection through 5.1 innings before leaving the game after allowing his first baserunner in the sixth. The Yankees had gotten to Matt Miller for another run in the top of the sixth for a 2-0 lead. Ken Griffey narrowed the gap with a pinch-hit HR in the eighth inning against Bobby Howry which was just the Cardinals' second hit of the game. The previously untouchable Mariano Rivera blew a save opportunity in the ninth by allowing a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu then allowing him to score following a pair of singles. Abreu stayed in the game to play 3B with Antonio Perez shifting over to SS. In the top of the tenth inning, Alex Rodriguez continued his torrid and timely hitting with a solo HR to put the Yanks up 3-2. Abreu matched the heroics with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning against Rivera. Rivera was pulled from the game with runners on the corners and two outs in favor of Jeremy Accardo who recorded the final out of the inning. Will Ohman came on for the Cardinals in the twelfth for his first appearance of the series. After walking Andruw Jones, Ohman hung one in the zone for Mark Ellis who put the Yankees up by two with a long blast to left center. Accardo was able to set the Cards down in the bottom of the inning. With Victor Martinez on second, Accardo got would-be hero Abreu to line out to Ellis to end the game and put the Yankees in a commanding 3-1 advantage in the World Series.
